The Grand National - Debate

For the past few weeks I have been investigating horse racing, in particular the Grand National.

Since this year’s race there has been significant controversy surrounding the deaths of Synchronised and According to Pete, especially when Synchronised had a scare before he even started to run.

I spoke to Tony Moore who runs a charity shop called Fight Against Cruelty to Animals (‘FAACE’) who had very strong views on the matter.

I have also spoke to Cath Pinnington who is the Manager at a thoroughbred rehabilitation centre in Lancaster, she had a slightly different view to Tony.

Currently I am editing the footage and audio and compiling a TV and Radio package. I will also be contacting both parties to ensure I can share their views.

Fire at the NASTAS

So PSTV are on their second day at the NASTAS and one of the trees have already gone up in flames. I’ve sent the video to tumblr so hopefully it will post.

Horse Racing - Cruelty or Respected Tradition?

With the Grand National this weekend, and the continuous protests from organisations such as PETA and Animal Cruelty agencies, horse racing is becoming the forefront of media attention.

As part of my degree I will be conducting a portfolio within the TV, Radio and Online platforms on a specific topic.

I will be looking at whether Horse Racing needs stricter guidlines to stop horses from dying or getting seriously injured from the sport and is it worth keeping such a traditional sport if it’s integrity is continuing to be questioned?!

My blog will be updated with my research and hopefully I’ll getting a good grade out of the finished product.

Kony 2012 ...Taking over my social networking feeds...

First of all I’ll admit I was completely and utterly taken in by the video yesterday and was spreading it all across Facebook and Twitter like it was going out of fashion.

But then speculation was underway and a lot of people who I certainly value the opinions of were posting tumblr pages and websites which seemed to show that the Invisible Children organisation and the Kony 2012 campaign is all a big lie…

I’ve looked at both sides of what is perceived to be the truth and I’ve concluded that it does seem to be rather sudden and not all that it originally seemed.

Joseph Kony is a terrible human being and there is many ‘leaders’ ‘rulers’ ‘dictators’ or whatever you wish to call these people out there that are destroying families, forcing children to kill and utilising their power to scare the population.

However, apparently according to many sites that I have read Kony isnt even in Uganda he’s actually been pushed out and has been practically starving to death since 2006… granted regardless how long ago he was a tyrant he should be in jail for war crimes etc, yet the charity themselves spend a hell of a lot of money on travelling and making the videos with only a small amount going back into the charity.

Social networking is a fantastic source to spread the word of something terrible and something that needs to be shown to governments to get action started but I worry that something as bad as Kony 2012 could be clouding the judgement of people before the facts have actually been put out there, before more propaganda grips us.

This is just something I’ve been speculating, as more and more evidence seems to be backing up the point, but nevertheless someone like Kony indeed does need to be stopped if he is still active, and not just because oil may be present which according to some sources 2.5 mil gallons have recently been found in Uganda.

Has reality TV gone too far?

Many people know about the reality TV show Take Me Out the basics of the show is Paddy McGuiness setting up dates and sending the lucky couple off to the Island of Fernandos.

Damion Merry was one of the lads to come down the ‘love lift’ and present himself to 30 single ladies, who I believe gave him a ridiculously hard time.

(The rumours about him dating Jodie Marsh which were stated on the show, I believe have now proved to be true, which was the first thing that needed to be cleared up.)

As the show progressed Damion was complete and utter banter, and unlike the lads previous actually made me laugh without having to put on a ridiculous outfit.

The girls continued to give him a hard time and to be honest when he finally got a date, it ended disastrously. In my personal opinion I would have thought it would have been a great date, the guy is just hilarious.

But it isn’t that which has given me a sickening feeling. Since the show Damion has received death threats including to his family, poisoned dog treats and is not allowed to appear on This Morning to defend himself.

Personally, I believe if an innocent (and hilarious) lad can’t have a bit of banter on what is meant to be a game show, of which many of the girls tend to be staying for the air time, rather than actually receiving a date then there is something incredibly wrong with our society.

Snooki (Nicole Polizzi): Pregnant?

According to ‘sources’ in the New York Times the Jersey Shore starlet is roughly 3 months pregnant with her first child.

Snooki a.k.a Nicole Polizzi has been in every season of the popular American reality show and is currently filming a spin off show with co-star Jenny ‘JWOWW’ Farley which will show the pair getting a flat together.

This is why the pregnancy rumours were thought to have been put to rest incase it hindered filming. Just recently on the 2nd February Snooki was on Good Morning America shooting down the speculation that she was expecting with current partner Jionni Lavelle.

‘I definitely do want kids, but I’m not pregnant,’ the 25 year old continued; ‘Being pregnant should be a real thing and a happy thing and I’m not.’

The sources have suggested that the reality star could be offered lucrative deals in regards to her pregnancy even signing a deal to release the news exclusively to a magazine.

MTV and Nicole’s rep have stated they are making no comment on the current series of Jersey Shore and the spin off show or whether she is in fact pregnant.

Lana Del Rey - Born To Die

My music recommendation for the week, the thing is with Lana Del Rey is that she is a very selective artist and is bringing something rather new and interesting to the music industry.

However even though very talented and clearly doing excellent in the charts many people believe she is merely a ‘fad’ and a phase for her audience and perhaps with a second album will become boring and repetetive?

Nevertheless, Born To Die is a brilliant song because it covers issues that many modern day artists don’t cover and would rather sing about pulling girls/boys in the clubs.

We All Have A Right To Freedom Of The Internet...

As many of you are aware American congress will be discussing new piracy laws over the internet on the 26th January known as SOPA and PIPA (to shorten it obviously)

I’m not going to get into the politics of the matter but more on a logical level. As a Broadcast Journalism student I rely on the internet for contacts, updated information and of course social networking.

If these policies/laws are passed it will not only make it much more difficult for me as a prospective journalist but also for people wanting to get their message out there via the media.

On a more personal level, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Youtube, Google, Wikipedia and many other well known and respective sites all come under threat. Wikipedia have already displayed protest to these laws by temporarily closing down their site.

Mark Zuckerberg posted a message onto Facebook he says:

‘The internet is the most powerful tool we have for creating a more open and connected world. We can’t let poorly thought out laws get in the way of the internet’s development. Facebook opposes SOPA and PIPA, and we will continue to oppose any laws that will hurt the internet.

The world today needs political leaders who are pro-internet. We have been working with many of these folks for months on better alternatives to these current proposals. I encourage you to learn more about these issues and tell your congressmen that you want them to be pro-internet.’

I think its clear that we are now in an age were freedom of the internet is not only a valid right but also a need for the population of computer, laptop, iPad and mobile phone owners etc. We should take some time to think what it would be like without our right to share content and blog what we like, say what we like and watch what we like.

Celebrity Big Brother 2012

Yep, Im making a blog post about it.

So last night saw 12 housemates go into the improved Big Brother house, which now looks like a cattle ranch.

There was a lot of speculation this time around as to who was going in and the big one was apparently going to be Lindsey Lohan. Now as many people waited patiently until the end, (as naturally she would be the last housemate in) we were given Denise Welch, which was fine but its not exactly Lindsey Lohan.

To be fair part of me wasn’t shocked with all the commotion around the troubled star at the moment it wouldn’t have been a good idea to lock her up in a house for three weeks with people who in some respects think quite highly of themselves.

And as for Frankie Cocozza, well, well, well there was certainly some opinion on this boy going in surrounded by the controversy of his ‘bad boy’ image and apparent relations with Geordie Shore star Holly who he referred to as ‘Hollyoaks.’

I must admit this time around there is going to be a serious ‘win’ for the show because the people they have in there will probably be ripping into each other by the end of the week especially Nicola Mclean and Natasha Giggs… (who is NOT a celebrity in any right.)

I guess it’s up to you to make your mind up for yourself but I certainly think it’s going to be entertaining.

So as you all know (well Im assuming you all know) Ive recently just completed a week’s work experience at Preston North End and absolutely loved it. Its certainly given me more of a passion not only for football but also to work in the journalism industry being involved in sport.

Its giving me more of a drive to look into where I could fit into the journalism sporting world, I’ll soon be doing 2 weeks work experience at BBC Radio Lancashire in a few weeks and Im definitely going to have a nosey at sport.

You’d think now I’d be chilling out, resting and just generally relaxing before all over the work exp commotion, but nope, I’ve been working at the pub Christmas eve, Christmas day, boxing day and I’ll be working New Year’s Eve *sigh* but now I’ve become fascinated in Ancient Egypt and just bought myself 4 books on it.

I think I have problems…however, the bright side is, how cool will it be when I can write on my CV that I can read Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphics…yes, very.
